BaT Auction: 1989 Porsche 928 S4 Cabriolet Conversion

This 1989 Porsche 928 S4 is finished in white over dark blue and features a soft top conversion reportedly performed by Newport Beach Convertible of California in 1990. Power comes from a 5.0L 32-valve V8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The owner acquired the car eight years ago, and subsequent maintenance included overhauls of the fuel and intake systems in 2012 along with a timing belt service in 2016. Now showing just under 92k miles, this 928 cabriolet offered with a clean Carfax report, service records, and a clean Arizona title in the name of the seller’s wife.

The body is finished in white and the soft top was reportedly added by Newport Beach Convertible in 1990. Aero-style mirrors were added in 2012 and the Scoche antenna was installed in 2013. The soft top’s hydraulic pump was replaced in April 2019 and Exclusive Paint and Body in Tucson, Arizona refinished the front of the car at the same time. Replacement lower rocker panels were sourced from 20th Street Auto Parts.

17″ Cup-style wheels are mounted with Nexen N Fera SU1 tires showing 2012 date codes. Braking is by red-painted calipers and drilled and slotted discs.

The interior is upholstered in dark blue with leather on the front and rear seats. Modifications include a 930S-style steering wheel, an aftermarket gear selector, and a Pioneer CD head unit. The air conditioning system was reportedly recharged in 2014

The digital odometer shows 92k miles, 16k of which were added by the seller over the past eight years. Controls for the soft top can be seen just ahead of the shift console.

The 5.0L 32-valve M28/42 V8 was rated at 316 horsepower when new and is mated to a 4-speed A28/16 automatic transmission. In 2012, the fuel system was overhauled with WitchHunter Performance fuel injectors and new fuel rails, fuel pump, and fuel pump relay. The thermostat was also replaced and the intake system received a new manifold and mass air flow sensor. The timing belt, tension arm, and oil pump were replaced in August 2016, with the tensioner being rebuilt at the same time. A new battery was installed in October 2018.
