BaT Auction: Euro 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport

This 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport is one of just 340 examples produced and is finished in Silver Metallic over black and grey Celebration cloth. Delivered new in 1989 to its first owner in Japan, the car was optioned from the factory with a locking differential, sport seats, a shortened shift lever, Bilstein sport dampers, a rear spoiler, a graduated-tint windscreen, and equipment for Germany. It now shows just 55k kilometers (~34k miles) and was brought to the US by its current owner in March 2018. Prior to importation, the current owner commissioned a brake system refurbishment by Garage Sakura of Yokohama, Japan. A top-end rebuild was performed on the numbers-matching 3.2-liter flat-six by Pacific Motors in April 2019, and the car retains its original Type G50 five-speed manual transaxle. This Carrera Club Sport is now offered on behalf of the current owner in Northern California with a build sheet, service records, a tool kit, and a clean Montana title.

The Club Sport model is based on the contemporary G-Series 3.2 Carrera and was created as a result of enthusiast demand for a track-inspired road car. Exterior features include a rear spoiler and a front air dam without provisions for fog lights. This CS is finished in Silver Metallic (S7S7) and, like most, was ordered without a sunroof. The seller states that the car was repainted at an unknown point in the past. Closeups of the finish can be seen in the photo gallery below along with a number of paint meter readings.

Porsche differentiated the exterior of the CS from that of the standard Carrera by applying a decal to the left-front fender that read “CS Clubsport.” Bumper mounts are lightened non-recoil units, and the front glass is a factory-optional graduated tint windscreen.

The car wears 16″ Fuchs alloy wheels and was equipped from the factory with Bilstein sport shocks. Depending on how one optioned a CS, weight savings could range from 50 to 100 kilograms compared to a standard 3.2 Carrera. Rear wipers and emblems were absent, and European-market cars wore amber rear turn signals and side markers, as well as narrow rear bumper guards.

The Club Sport received manually-adjustable cloth sport seats, here upholstered in checkered Celebration cloth upholstery. The door panels, dash, and carpets are contrasting black. Rear seating and speakers were factory deleted, and this car is equipped with an optional shortened shift lever. Air conditioning and power windows were also deleted on the CS, as were central locking and heavy-duty sound insulation.

A leather four-spoke steering wheel fronts five individual VDO gauges, including a central 7,000-rpm tachometer and a 260-km/h speedometer. The odometer currently displays just under 55k kilometers (~34k miles), about 9k of which have been added by the current owner.

European Club Sports featured a factory-blueprinted 3.2L flat-six, which was based on the 930/20 engine. It was rated at 230 horsepower at 5,800 rpm when new and equipped with hollow intake valves and a compression ratio of 10.3:1. A revised Bosch engine management system raised the maximum permitted revolutions by 320 to 6,840 rpm. A recent top-end rebuild was performed by Pacific Motors, and the seller states that approximately 2,000 break-in miles have been added since. The G50 five-speed manual transaxle features a factory limited-slip differential.
